National Museum of Nature and Science
What it is
This is Japan's main natural history and science museum, split between a domed Japanese Building covering the country's scientific development up to the Meiji era, and a Global Gallery with exhibits on natural history, dinosaurs, and technology. The most-visited items tend to be the taxidermied remains of Hachikō, the dog known for waiting years at Shibuya Station for his owner, and Taro and Jiro, two Antarctic expedition dogs. Outside, there's a life-size blue whale model and a preserved steam locomotive.
Getting there
The museum sits inside Ueno Park, a few minutes' walk from Ueno Station, which is reachable from central Tokyo in roughly 10-20 minutes by JR or subway lines depending on your starting point.
Time to allow
Plan for around 2-3 hours if you want to see both the Japanese Building and the Global Gallery without rushing.
When to go
Weekends and school holidays bring larger crowds, particularly around the dinosaur and popular science exhibits, so a weekday visit is more comfortable. Since most of the museum is indoors, it works well as an option on rainy days.
What to combine it with
Ueno Park is dense with museums, so this pairs easily with a longer day out. The National Museum of Western Art is just 0.1km away, the Tokyo National Museum and Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum are both about 0.3km off, and Ueno Zoo is roughly 0.5km away. Given the number of options nearby, it's worth picking one or two rather than trying to fit them all into a single day.
