This is Japan's first public art museum, opened in 1926 and rebuilt in its current form in 1975 to a design by architect Kunio Maekawa. Getting there
The museum sits inside Ueno Park, on the northeast side of central Tokyo. From areas like Shinjuku or Shibuya, take a JR line to Ueno Station and walk about 10 minutes through the park to the museum. From Tokyo Station, it's a short ride on the JR Yamanote or Keihin-Tohoku Line to Ueno, plus the same walk.

Plan on one to two hours for a single exhibition, more if it's a major touring show with large crowds moving through galleries at a slower pace.
When to go
Popular exhibitions, especially blockbuster international loans, can draw heavy crowds and long entry queues, so arriving soon after opening or on a weekday helps. Ueno Park itself gets very busy during cherry blossom season in late March and early April, which adds to foot traffic around the museum entrance.
