This is Japan's main public collection of Western art, covering paintings and sculpture from medieval to early 20th-century Europe. It's worth visiting for the breadth of the permanent collection, including a well-known group of Rodin sculptures displayed outside the entrance, as well as any temporary exhibitions on show.

The museum sits inside Ueno Park in Taitō, central Tokyo, a short walk from Ueno Station on the JR Yamanote Line. From central Tokyo (e.g. Tokyo Station), expect around 15-20 minutes by train, plus a few minutes on foot from the station exit to the museum.

Budget roughly 1.5 to 2 hours for the permanent collection alone; add extra time if a special exhibition is running.
When to go
Weekends and holidays tend to draw larger crowds, especially when a major temporary exhibition is on, so a weekday visit is generally calmer. As with much of Ueno Park, spring cherry-blossom season brings heavier foot traffic to the area overall.
