This is Japan's oldest and largest art museum, spread across several buildings in Ueno Park. The main draw is the honkan (Japanese Gallery), which covers Japanese art and archaeology from prehistory through the 19th century — swords, ceramics, lacquerware, ukiyo-e prints, and Buddhist sculpture. The Toyokan building holds Asian art from China, Korea, Southeast Asia, and along the Silk Road, and the Horyuji Treasures gallery displays a separate collection of items donated from Horyuji Temple in Nara. It suits travellers interested in Japanese history and craftsmanship rather than a quick photo stop.
Getting there
From central Tokyo, the easiest approach is by train to Ueno Station (served by JR lines and the Tokyo Metro Ginza and Hibiya lines), then a walk of around 10-15 minutes through Ueno Park to the museum. From Tokyo Station, the JR ride itself takes roughly 10 minutes.
Time to allow
Plan for at least two to three hours if you want to see both the honkan and Toyokan properly; a full visit covering all buildings can take half a day.
When to go
Weekday mornings tend to be quieter than weekends and holidays. Special exhibitions can draw large crowds, so expect queues at the entrance and ticket counters during those periods. Ueno Park is also busy during cherry blossom season in spring, which adds foot traffic on the approach to the museum.
