What Tomari is
Tomari is the district around Naha's Tomari Port, one of the city's two main ferry terminals (the other being the larger Naha Port). It's a working transport hub rather than a sightseeing destination in itself: travellers pass through it to catch ferries to nearby islands such as Tokashiki, Zamami, and other parts of the Kerama Islands, or to Kume Island. The area around the terminal is largely functional — ticket counters, waiting areas, and port facilities — so most visitors are here to board a boat, not to linger.
Getting there
Tomari is close to central Naha, within walking distance of Kokusai-dōri, and reachable by taxi or local bus in well under 15 minutes from most points in the city centre. It is not served directly by the Yui Rail monorail, so a taxi, bus, or a roughly 15–20 minute walk from the nearest monorail station is the usual approach.
How much time to allow
If you're just passing through to catch a ferry, allow enough time to find the correct terminal building and check in before departure, since Naha's port area has multiple terminals serving different routes. Beyond that, there's little to detain you at Tomari itself.
When to go
Arrive with margin before your ferry's scheduled departure, particularly during the Kerama Islands' busier travel season, when queues for tickets and boarding can build up. Outside of specific sailing times, the area doesn't draw crowds.
What to combine it with
Tomari works well as a start or end point for a day that includes central Naha sights rather than as a destination on its own. Kokusai-dōri (0.8km) is within easy walking distance for shopping and dining, and the Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum (0.8km) is similarly close. Fukushūen garden (1.3km) and the Naha City Museum of History (1.3km) are also reachable on foot or by a short taxi ride, making it easy to build an itinerary around the port without needing to backtrack across the city.
