Church of the Gesù
ジェズ教会 はかつてイエズス会の本拠地（母教会）だった教会である。正式名は Chiesa del Santissimo Nome di Gesù all'Argentina（イエス・キリストの神聖な御名の教会）。そのファサードは「世界初の真のバロック様式のファサード」と言われている。世界中のイエズス会の教会はこの教会をモデルとしており、アメリカ州の教会にその傾向が強い。ジェズ教会はローマのジェズー広場に面している。
Overview
The Church of the Gesù is the mother church of the Jesuit order, built in the second half of the 16th century in the Pigna district of central Rome. Its façade is often cited as the first fully baroque church front in the city, and its interior became a template for Jesuit churches worldwide. The main draw inside is the ceiling fresco over the nave, along with the elaborately decorated Chapel of St. Ignatius, which houses the tomb of Ignatius of Loyola, the order's founder. Travellers interested in baroque art and architecture, or in the history of the Jesuits, will find this one of the more significant churches in Rome outside St. Peter's.
Getting there
The church sits right on Piazza del Gesù, an easy walk from most central Rome hotels. From Piazza Venezia it's about a 5-minute walk; from the Pantheon, around 10 minutes on foot. Public buses and trams stop along Via del Plebiscito and Largo di Torre Argentina nearby.
Time to allow
Most visitors spend 20 to 40 minutes inside, longer if you linger over the ceiling fresco and the side chapels.
When to go
Mornings tend to be quieter than midday, when tour groups and other visitors from the surrounding sights pass through. The church can feel dim, so visiting when daylight is stronger helps with viewing the frescoes.
