Monte Pelmo is a mountain of the Dolomites, in the province of Belluno, Northeastern Italy.
What it is
Monte Pelmo is one of the standalone peaks of the Dolomites, in the province of Belluno. Its rock walls rise steeply out of the surrounding valleys, and the mountain is visible from a wide radius, which is a big part of why people come to look at it rather than to summit it — the top is a serious climbing objective, not a hiking destination. Most visitors experience it from below: from mountain huts, viewpoint trails, and passes that frame the massif.
Getting there
There's no single "city centre" for Monte Pelmo — it sits between valley towns such as Selva di Cadore, Borca di Cadore, and Zoldo. From these villages, reaching a trailhead at the base of the mountain typically takes 20–40 minutes by car on local roads, followed by a walk in. Public transport in the area is limited, so a car (or organized transfer) is the practical option.
Time to allow
A walk to one of the rifugi (mountain huts) at the base of the mountain and back generally takes half a day. If you plan a full loop trail around the massif, allow a full day, with good boots and normal hiking preparation.
When to go
The higher trails are only realistically walkable from late spring through early autumn, once snow has cleared; conditions above the treeline can change quickly, so check weather before heading up. Mornings tend to offer clearer visibility before afternoon cloud builds, which is common in the Dolomites in summer.
Combine it with
- Monte Civetta (7.6km) — another major Dolomite peak nearby, often photographed together with Pelmo from shared viewpoints.
- Giau Pass (9.5km) — a mountain pass with wide views, a common stop for those driving through the area.
- Antelao (10.4km) — a further peak that can be combined into a broader Dolomites driving or hiking itinerary.
- Cinque Torri (11.6km) — a rock formation and hiking area, reachable as part of the same day out.
