Palace of Portici

ポルティチ宮殿

The Royal Palace of Portici is a former royal palace in Portici, Southeast of Naples along the coast, in the region of Campania, Italy. It now contains a museum complex which includes the royal apartments, the Herculanense Museum, the frescoed antechambers, the Chinese Room, the historical library, and the Orto Botanico di Portici, a botanical garden operated by the University of Naples Federico II. These gardens were once part of the large royal estate that included an English garden, a zoo and formal parterres.

What it is

The Royal Palace of Portici was a Bourbon royal residence built along the coast southeast of Naples. Today the palace grounds house a museum complex — royal apartments, the Herculanense Museum, frescoed antechambers, and a Chinese Room — alongside the Orto Botanico di Portici, a working botanical garden run by the University of Naples Federico II. The appeal is a mix of Bourbon court history and the gardens, which are the surviving core of what was once a much larger royal estate with an English garden, a menagerie, and formal parterres.

Getting there

Portici sits along the coast southeast of Naples' city centre, reachable by the Circumvesuviana suburban rail line or a coastal bus route. Depending on where you start in central Naples, the trip generally runs somewhere around 20-30 minutes.

Time to allow

Plan on a couple of hours if you want to see the palace rooms and walk through the botanical garden without rushing; add more time if you're interested in the Herculanense Museum's collection.

When to go

Mornings tend to be quieter, and the gardens are more pleasant to walk through before the midday heat in summer. As with most university-affiliated sites, access to parts of the complex can depend on academic term schedules, so it's worth checking ahead if you have a specific room or garden section in mind.

Combine it with

  • Villa of the Papyri (0.6km) — close enough to pair in the same visit.
  • Mercato (7.2km) and Santa Maria del Carmine (7.4km) — grouped together back in central Naples.
  • Castel Nuovo (8.1km) — also in central Naples, best folded into a day exploring the historic centre.

Santa Maria del Carmine

Santa Maria del Carmine is a church in Naples, Italy. It is at one end of Piazza Mercato, the centre of civic life in Naples for many centuries until it was cut off from the rest of the city by urban renewal in 1900. The church was founded in the 13th century by Carmelite friars driven from the Holy Land in the Crusades, presumably arriving in the Bay of Naples aboard Amalfitan ships. Some sources, however, place the original refugees from Mount Carmel as early as the eighth century. The church is still in use and the 75–metre bell tower is visible from a distance even amidst taller modern bui...

Castel Capuano is a castle in Naples, southern Italy. It takes its name from the fact that it was at that point in the city walls where the road led out to the city of Capua.
