How to plan your first trip to Da Nang, Vietnam

Getting oriented

Da Nang splits into a few areas. The city center runs along the Han River in Hai Chau district, with markets and bridges that light up at night. Across the river, Son Tra district holds the coast: My Khe beach and the An Thuong strip of resorts. Further south, Ngu Hanh Son district has more beachfront and the Marble Mountains. Ba Na Hills and Hoi An are separate day trips, not walkable neighborhoods.

From the airport, and getting around

Da Nang International Airport (DAD) sits close to the city center, closer than most gateway airports are to their downtown. The river side and the beach strip are both a short ride away. There is no metro, so travel is by taxi, Grab, or a metered taxi from a reputable company. Grab gives a fixed fare without negotiating. Motorbike rental is common among longer-term visitors, but first-timers unfamiliar with local traffic shouldn't default to it.

What first-timers usually get wrong

• Treating Hoi An as a neighborhood. It's a separate town roughly 30-45 minutes away, not a walk from the beach strip.
• Never leaving the resort strip. The beach and the working river city are different experiences; skipping one misses much of what sets Da Nang apart.
• Underestimating Ba Na Hills. The cable car and gardens draw large crowds, and mountain weather can differ from the coast, so treat it as a full day.
• Assuming every taxi is metered fairly. Stick to recognized companies or use Grab, where the fare is fixed before you get in.

Shaping a first trip

Spend the first day or two near the river and My Khe beach to get a feel for both sides of the city. Give Hoi An's ancient town a full day. Treat Ba Na Hills as optional and weather-dependent, and save the Marble Mountains for a half day if time allows. Fitting it all into a short stay means rushing what's worth slowing down for.
