When to Visit Naples
Naples sits under Vesuvius on a wide bay, swinging from mild, damp winters to hot, humid summers. Heat and crowds decide which trip suits which month.
Spring (April-June)
The most comfortable stretch: mild temperatures, long daylight, coastal towns in bloom. Good for day trips to Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast before summer crowds build. Easter week draws visitors for processions, so central lodging fills and prices rise that weekend.
Summer (July-August)
Strong heat and humidity, with little relief at night in the historic center's narrow streets. Naples empties out around mid-August for Ferragosto, when many family-run shops and trattorias close for a week or two. Amalfi and Capri are heavily booked through August; go early morning, or pick June/September instead.
Autumn (September-October)
Sea stays warm into September while crowds thin, a good alternative to summer for coastal trips. Rain picks up by late October.
Winter (November-March)
Mild but wet, with grey skies more common than cold snaps. Pompeii and the coast are quieter, though some ferries cut back outside the warmer months. Late December to early January brings crowds to Via San Gregorio Armeno for its nativity-scene workshops.
Getting Around
- Metro Line 1 stations like Toledo and Municipio double as art installations, worth riding any time of year.
- Line 2 is faster for crossing the center to the main train station.
- Funiculars linking Vomero and Chiaia are daily transit, not tourist novelties, and get crowded at rush hour.
- Capri and Sorrento ferries run reduced winter schedules; check timings outside spring/summer.
What to Pack
- Summer: light clothing, sun protection, a water bottle.
- Winter: a waterproof layer, since rain beats cold here.
- Any season: a cross-body bag, as pickpocketing on crowded streets is a real concern.

Phlegraean Fields
The Phlegraean Fields are a vast volcanic caldera west of Naples, so close to the city that part of Naples itself sits atop it. The terrain, shaped by volcanic activity, is dotted with fumaroles and other signs of geothermal activity, and the area is often described in the media as a "supervolcano."

From 1816 to 1861, it was known as the "Royal Bourbon Museum."
