Naples rewards staying central: the historic core is dense and walkable, so a low budget doesn't mean a long commute to the sights.

Centro Storico and near the University

Streets around Piazza Bellini, Spaccanapoli, and the University put you within walking distance of the Duomo and archaeological museum. Student-heavy, lively at night, and full of low-cost guesthouses and B&Bs. Line 1's Museo and Dante stations are close by.

Quartieri Spagnoli, around Toledo

Narrow, steep streets just off Via Toledo. Rents are lower here and it shows in prices, though rooms can be small and noise carries. Toledo (Line 1), one of the decorated art stations, sits at the edge of the district, close to the waterfront and Line 2's Montesanto stop.

Near Piazza Garibaldi / Napoli Centrale

The cheapest concentration of beds in the city, where Line 1, Line 2, and the airport shuttle meet. Convenient for early Pompeii or Amalfi trains, but the immediate station area is the spot most worth watching belongings, especially after dark.

Vomero

Up the hill, reached by the Centrale, Chiaia, or Montesanto funiculars. Calmer and residential, with value in mid-range guesthouses rather than rock-bottom prices — a funicular ride traded for quiet streets and views.

What to check before booking

• Distance to the nearest Line 1/Line 2 stop or funicular, not just to the Duomo
• Upper floors or interior courtyards if noise matters, especially in Quartieri Spagnoli
• Ground-floor or street-facing rooms near Garibaldi, where security is more of a concern
• Whether the listing mentions stairs with no lift, common in older buildings

When to visit

Rooms are tightest and priciest in July, August, and around Easter, when Pompeii and Amalfi day-trippers also fill Naples. Spring and autumn bring more availability at the lower end of the market.
