Getting around Bali

There's no metro or city rail. Seminyak, Ubud and Nusa Dua sit far apart, so daily shuttling wastes hours; plan one base per stretch and move once.

Which modes matter

  • Private driver: best for inter-area trips and multi-stop sightseeing.
  • Ride-hailing apps (Gojek, Grab): good for short hops within Seminyak, Kuta or Nusa Dua. Central Ubud and parts of Seminyak restrict app pickups locally, so drivers may ask you to walk to a corner.
  • Metered taxis (Blue Bird): reliable when flagged or booked via app; avoid unmarked touts at the airport.
  • Scooter rental: fast for short trips if you're used to Bali traffic; impractical for airport runs with luggage.
  • Walking: fine inside Seminyak's beach strip or Ubud's center, patchy elsewhere.

Passes and tickets

No transit pass exists. Travelers hire a driver by the day for multi-stop plans, or pay per trip via app for single errands. Day-rate drivers don't suit one or two stops; apps don't suit a full day of waiting stops.

Airport to city compared

  • Seminyak/Kuta: shortest, least effort; app or metered taxi both work.
  • Nusa Dua: similarly short, mostly toll road; airport taxi counters or pre-booked transfers work well.
  • Ubud: longest leg, an hour or more in traffic; pre-booking a driver beats hailing on arrival.

Practical notes

  • Rush hour builds on Sunset Road, Kuta-Legian and around Ubud's market by late afternoon.
  • No scheduled late-night transit; apps run into the night but can thin out or surge after midnight.
  • Confirm luggage space in advance for more than a carry-on.
  • Accessibility is limited: broken sidewalks and motorbike-heavy streets favor a car with a driver for mobility needs.
