Bali is several small worlds, not one destination. Seminyak is coastal and walkable, dense with dining and beach clubs. Ubud sits inland among rice terraces and is the base for culture and art. Nusa Dua is a gated resort zone on the southeastern tip, calmer and self-contained. These do not blend into each other; moving between them takes real time, so pick one base per stretch instead of switching hotels daily.

Arriving and getting around

Almost everyone arrives through Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), near Kuta on the southern coast. From there, Seminyak is roughly a 30-45 minute drive, Nusa Dua about 20-30 minutes, and Ubud a slower 60-90 minutes depending on traffic. There is no metro. Getting around means taxis, hired drivers, or app-based ride-hailing, though pickups are restricted in some zones, including parts of Ubud and Seminyak. For trips beyond your base, hire a driver for the day rather than app rides.

What first-timers usually get wrong

The common mistake is treating Seminyak, Ubud, and Nusa Dua as day-trip distances from each other. Traffic on connecting roads is often slow, and a quick visit can eat half a day. Another is assuming ride-hailing apps work everywhere the way they do in big cities; check locally first. Swimming also deserves care: conditions and currents vary by coast, so follow posted flags rather than assuming every beach is calm.

A sensible shape for a first trip

Pick one area as your base, then add a short stay elsewhere if time allows, rather than commuting daily between them. Early days are well spent settling into your base area on foot. Save temple visits, rice terraces, or waterfalls further afield for a full day with a hired driver, since these sit outside any single district. Leave the last stretch flexible; travel times on Bali roads are unpredictable enough that a loose schedule holds up better than a tight one.
